John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born on the 3rd January, 1892 at Bloemfontein in the Orange Free State. At the age of 4 him and his brother were taken back to England. When Tolkien's father died, he moved, with his family, to Sarehole.

When Tolkien was 12 his mother died and he and his brother were classified as orphans. Tolkien fought in the first world war, and in the trenches he wrote his first book.

Tolkien went on to write even more books, such as the hobbit and the lord of the rings. for some time he was at oxford but moved to Bornemouth with his wife. his wife sadly died in 1971, because of this he moved back to oxford. He died on 2 September 1973, with a son, Christopher Tolkien.
